Chinese Premier Warns Against Unilateralism at UN

Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Friday warned against the rise of unilateral policies and reliance on force during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, calling such approaches obstacles to achieving global peace.
Although he did not explicitly mention the United States, his remarks reflected China’s longstanding concerns over Washington’s assertive policies, particularly during the Trump administration. In what was described as his first major international appearance since becoming premier, Li portrayed Beijing as a defender of international order against global disorder.
Li cautioned that Cold War mentalities and the tendency of powerful nations to dictate terms risk driving the world toward division and decline. He stressed that if societies allow force to replace justice, humanity will face greater brutality and bloodshed.
His remarks come as the Taliban in Afghanistan continue to disregard fundamental human rights and suppress political freedoms — an example of the unilateralism Li warned against. Observers note that his caution applies not only to global powers but also to regional actors, who must adhere to principles of justice.
