UN Peacekeeper Killed in Southern Lebanon Amid Rising Tensions

A United Nations peacekeeper was killed and another seriously injured following the explosion of a projectile at one of the UNIFIL positions in southern Lebanon. This incident occurred amid a significant escalation of military tensions in the area.

Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, condemned the attack, describing it as a serious threat to peacekeeping forces. UNIFIL has been deployed since 1978 to monitor security along the Lebanon-Israel border.

Simultaneously, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered an expansion of military operations in southern Lebanon. He stated that he had instructed the army to “expand the existing security zone in Lebanon to decisively curb infiltration threats and prevent anti-tank rocket launches from our borders.”

Following increased Israeli airstrikes, several Lebanese families taking refuge at the Lebanese National Theater said they have been forced to leave their homes due to repeated evacuation warnings and ongoing targeting of their areas.

Clashes between Hezbollah and Israel have escalated since early March. According to official figures, over 1,000 people have been killed in Lebanon so far, with more than one million residents of southern Lebanon displaced as a result of the conflict.
