Floods in 13 Provinces: 17 Dead and 500 Families Affected

The Disaster Management Authority under the Taliban administration has reported that following heavy rains and floods over the past 24 hours, at least 17 people have died and 26 others have been injured across 13 provinces in the country. According to the authority, approximately 500 families have also been affected by these incidents.

Yousuf Hammad, the spokesperson for the authority, stated in a video released on Sunday, April 9, that the floods have impacted the provinces of Badghis, Sar-e-Pul, Parwan, Daikundi, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Farah, Herat, Ghor, Samangan, Faryab, Jowzjan, and Laghman. He added that extensive damage to homes and public facilities has occurred in some areas.

According to the information provided, 37 houses have been completely destroyed, and 110 others have suffered partial damage. Additionally, 24 wells, seven water supply networks, and 10 shops have been damaged, along with approximately 80 kilometers of roads and 282 jeribs (units) of agricultural land.

Taliban-controlled national television also reported that in the Qadis and Dara-i-Boom districts of Badghis Province alone, four people have died and three others have been injured.

This comes after the Meteorological Department of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, under the Taliban administration, issued a warning one day earlier about the potential for heavy rainfall in 30 provinces, predicting rainfall between 10 and 40 millimeters. Despite these warnings, field reports indicate that many vulnerable areas still lack preventive measures and effective risk reduction strategies. This ongoing issue results in heavy casualties and damages to residents each year, underscoring the urgent need for transparent and accountable management.
