Flooding Causes Road Closures in Northern Afghanistan

The Taliban’s Ministry of Public Works announced that several transportation routes in the provinces of Sar-e Pol, Balkh, and Faryab have been closed due to flooding. According to the ministry, this event followed recent heavy rainfall and has caused difficulties for residents in some areas.

Ashraf Haqshenas, the ministry’s spokesman, said in a statement on Sunday, March 28, that the roads connecting the districts of Kohistanat, Al-Badr, and Sayyad in Sar-e Pol province, as well as the Charkent district in Balkh province, have been temporarily closed.

Meanwhile, the public road between Badghis and Faryab has also been declared closed due to ongoing floods. This highway is one of the main routes in northwestern Afghanistan, and its closure could disrupt transportation and the movement of commercial goods.

The Taliban’s administration has stated that technical teams have been assigned to reopen these routes. However, no details have been provided regarding the exact timing for the reopening of the roads or the resources available for managing natural disasters.

Most provinces in the country have experienced rainfall in recent days; a recurring issue that causes damage and road closures every year due to the lack of proper infrastructure to manage surface water runoff.
