Daily Return of 1,700 Afghan Migrants Amid US and Israeli Attacks on Iran

The Norwegian Refugee Council has reported that approximately 1,700 Afghan migrants are returning to Afghanistan daily following the onset of US and Israeli attacks on Iran. According to the organization, many of these individuals are in poor psychological condition and arrive in Afghanistan without assets or basic necessities.
On Tuesday, March 16, the council issued a statement saying that returnees often reach the borders empty-handed and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Based on the information provided, a large portion of them have lost their sources of income and places of residence amid recent developments.
The Norwegian Refugee Council also warned that the capacity of aid resources within Afghanistan is limited, while currently 22 million people in the country require humanitarian aid. The increasing wave of returning migrants could place additional pressure on host communities and vulnerable structures.
Previously, the United Nations had expressed concern about the situation of Afghan migrants in Iran, noting their limited access to support resources and insufficient legal protections.
Meanwhile, given the widespread economic crisis and unemployment in Afghanistan, aid organizations emphasize that the Taliban administration is responsible for facilitating returnees’ access to basic services, shelter, and livelihood opportunities—an issue for which no clear response has yet been provided regarding its management.
