Taliban Frees 167 Prisoners in Badakhshan, Paktia, and Zabul for Eid al-Fitr

To mark the arrival of Eid al-Fitr, 167 detainees and prisoners in the provinces of Badakhshan, Paktia, and Zabul have been granted amnesty by the Taliban administration and released from prisons. At the same time, the sentences of 218 others in these provinces have been reduced.
According to the information provided, this action is part of customary amnesty programs conducted during religious occasions. No details have been released regarding the types of charges or the criteria used to select individuals who received amnesty or sentence reductions.
In recent years, human rights organizations have repeatedly emphasized the need for transparency in the processes of arrest, trial, and detention in the country. Given concerns about prison conditions, there is an expectation that the Taliban administration will share clearer information with the public about case reviews and prisoners’ circumstances.
Badakhshan is located in the northeast, Paktia in the east, and Zabul in the south of the country; these provinces host correctional centers operated by the Taliban administration.
