UN Human Rights Council Meeting in Geneva to Address Afghanistan Situation
The 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council has commenced at the UN headquarters in Geneva, with the participation of the UN Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, and senior international officials. Afghanistan is included on the official agenda of this meeting. On February 26 and 27, two reports and a specialized dialogue on the situation in Afghanistan are scheduled to be presented, alongside related side meetings.
Nasir Ahmad Andisha, Afghanistan’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, stated that the Afghanistan topic will involve the presentation of two reports and the holding of a specialized dialogue. According to him, the discussions will focus on the human rights situation in the country, especially in light of recent developments.
Additionally, Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, will deliver his latest report concerning the rights of women and girls—a subject that has become one of the primary concerns of the international community in recent years.
At the opening of the session, UN officials, including the President of the General Assembly, highlighted violations of the rights of Afghan women and girls. Extensive restrictions imposed by the Taliban administration on women’s education, employment, and social participation have consistently drawn critical responses from international organizations and remain a central issue in the Geneva discussions.
The UN Human Rights Council is one of the key bodies tasked with monitoring and addressing human rights violations worldwide, and its decisions and deliberations can significantly influence diplomatic processes and international pressures.
