UNICEF Warns Afghan Schoolchildren Are Attending Classes Without Learning

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that Afghanistan’s education system is facing a deep crisis, with attending school not equating to actual learning for a large number of students.
According to a recent UNICEF assessment, over 90 percent of ten-year-old children who attend school are unable to read simple texts. This finding indicates that being present in the classroom does not necessarily mean acquiring educational skills.
UNICEF cited poor educational quality, lack of specialized teachers, and unsuitable learning environments as key factors in this crisis. Experts believe that the restrictions imposed by the Taliban administration, particularly on girls’ education, have further exacerbated the situation.
Since the Taliban regained power, pressure on Afghanistan’s education system has increased, seriously challenging millions of children’s access to education. This situation puts the future of the new generation of Afghanistan at significant risk, raising concerns among international organizations.
