Tajikistan’s Ambassador Meets Taliban Acting Foreign Minister to Discuss Economic and Border Cooperation

Saadi Sharifi, Tajikistan’s ambassador to Kabul, met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting foreign minister of the Taliban administration, to discuss the development of bilateral relations, especially in economic and border areas.
According to a statement released by the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting emphasized strengthening political, economic, and trade relations between Kabul and Dushanbe. Muttaqi highlighted the exchanges of delegations between the two countries and said that Afghanistan and Tajikistan, as neighboring countries with shared cultural and linguistic ties, have vast capacities for cooperation at various levels.
He added that the Taliban administration seeks to expand relations with the Republic of Tajikistan further and believes that the existing ties can foster mutual trust. This comes as the nature and level of Afghanistan’s regional relations continue to be under the scrutiny and assessment of neighboring countries several years after the Taliban’s return to power.
On the other hand, the Tajik ambassador provided information on recent developments and previous agreements between the two countries. He emphasized that Tajikistan is pursuing significant economic programs and projects along the shared border and desires to continue economic cooperation with Afghanistan based on current realities.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides exchanged views on holding the joint economic committee meeting, enhancing border and security cooperation, and the work plans of the two countries’ foreign ministries for the upcoming year. Afghanistan and Tajikistan share a border stretching over one thousand kilometers, and developments in these areas have always impacted bilateral relations.
