UN Deputy Secretary-General and Taliban’s Haqqani Discuss Next Doha Process Working Group Meeting in Kabul

Rosemary DiCarlo, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, announced during a meeting with Sirajuddin Haqqani, acting Minister of Interior of the Taliban administration, that the next meeting of the Doha Process working groups will be held in Kabul. According to a statement released by the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior on Sunday, January 24, both sides discussed how the international community engages with the Taliban administration, cooperation in combating narcotics, Afghanistan’s economic stability, lifting banking restrictions, and the continuation of humanitarian aid. During the meeting, the UN Deputy Secretary-General also assured that humanitarian assistance from the organization will continue to reach the people of Afghanistan. This aid is considered vital for millions of residents amid the ongoing economic crisis and extensive restrictions. The meeting took place a day after Rosemary DiCarlo also met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, acting Foreign Minister of the Taliban administration, where they exchanged views on cooperation and coordination between the UN and the Taliban authorities. These developments concerning the holding of international meetings in Kabul and ongoing dialogues come as the Taliban administration faces serious criticism from the global community due to widespread restrictions on fundamental rights and freedoms, particularly those of women—a factor that continues to overshadow the nature and level of these engagements.
