UN Urges Immediate Aid for Earthquake Victims in Kunar as Winter Approaches

As temperatures drop and winter approaches, the United Nations has called on humanitarian agencies to increase assistance for residents affected by the earthquake in Kunar province. Andrika Ratwatte, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Afghanistan, warned on Monday, October 6, that shelter remains the top priority for earthquake victims.

Ratwatte expressed concern that neglecting the situation could heighten the vulnerability of families who have lost their homes. He urged the international community to take immediate action to prevent a humanitarian crisis in the earthquake-stricken areas.

In addition to shelter, he identified the provision of safe drinking water as another critical need for the affected population. According to him, the lack of health services and access to water could further deteriorate the living conditions of the families impacted by the quake.

According to reports, the recent earthquake in Kunar province has destroyed more than six thousand houses, leaving thousands of families homeless. However, the Taliban administration has so far been ineffective in responding to the crisis, and the delivery of effective aid by this administration has been slow.
