UNICEF Reports Over 2.6 Million Returnees to Afghanistan in 2025 Amid Worsening Drought Crisis

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that more than 2.6 million people returned to Afghanistan during 2025. This return coincides with a persistent drought, which has further exacerbated the difficult conditions faced by families, especially children.
According to UNICEF, many children among the returning families lack access to basic living essentials and healthcare facilities, a situation that increases the risk of diseases in vulnerable areas.
The organization adds that, with support from China and through its International Development Cooperation Agency, it is distributing health packages to returning families to meet some of their urgent needs.
Halima, one of the mothers receiving these aid packages, stated that they could play a crucial role in protecting children’s health. However, aid organizations emphasize that without effective planning and accountability from the Taliban administration addressing the humanitarian crises, the needs will remain widespread and surpass temporary assistance.
