6.0-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan, Causing Over $86 Million in Damages

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake that hit eastern Afghanistan on August 31, 2025, has caused significant economic losses and damage, according to international agencies led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
A joint assessment conducted with the UN office in Afghanistan, the European Union, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank estimates the total damage and economic loss at approximately $86.8 million USD.
The report further states that at least $128.8 million USD in financial aid is required for reconstruction, infrastructure repair, and addressing the urgent needs of those affected—underscoring the extensive impact in the earthquake-affected areas.
The release of the assessment comes amid complaints from residents in the affected regions about slow relief efforts and a lack of preparedness. Critics argue that despite repeated natural disasters, the Taliban administration has yet to present a clear and transparent plan for crisis management and effective public support in such situations.
