Twenty Machine-Made Carpet Factories Operational in Herat

Local officials in Herat province have announced that 20 machine-made carpet and rug factories are currently operating in the region’s industrial park, playing a significant role in meeting domestic market demand across Afghanistan.

Nasir Amin, head of the Herat Chamber of Industries and Mines, stated that approximately 45% of the country’s machine-made carpets and rugs are produced by the factories based in Herat. He added that with the launch of several new companies next year, the industry is expected to experience substantial growth.

Amin noted that these factories utilize advanced machinery, producing thousands of square meters of machine-made carpets and rugs daily—a capacity that could solidify Herat’s status as the nation’s primary hub for this industry.

Meanwhile, some industrialists say that if issues such as electricity shortages and difficulties in importing raw materials are resolved, the production capacity of these factories could significantly increase.

In addition to manufacturing, the sector has created employment opportunities for hundreds of Herat residents. Workers say that having steady jobs in these factories has given them renewed hope for their futures.

Herat’s local authorities also emphasize that the machine-made carpet and rug industry has become a key pillar of Afghanistan’s national economy. Mohammad Yousuf Saeedi, spokesperson for the Herat governor, highlighted the operation of 20 factories and Herat’s 45% share in the domestic market as major drivers behind the industry’s growth.

According to official statistics, there are currently 14 carpet production companies and six machine-made rug production companies operating in Herat province.
