Bodies of 18 Migrants Found Off Greek Island of Crete

The Greek coast guard announced on Saturday that the bodies of 18 migrants were discovered on a partially submerged boat off the southwestern coast of Crete. Two survivors were rescued by emergency teams and transferred to a hospital for treatment.

According to Greek officials, the boat was located about 26 nautical miles from the shores of Crete. The passengers had reportedly been adrift for hours or possibly even days without access to water, food, or shelter before being found. The survivors stated that a sudden storm and rough sea conditions led to the boat’s failure and the resulting tragedy.

Forensic experts are currently investigating the exact causes of death. Dehydration, heatstroke, and prolonged physical stress are believed to be the main contributing factors. Greek investigative authorities have begun examining the site of the incident and working to identify the victims.

This incident is the latest in a series of maritime tragedies involving migrants attempting to reach Europe. Fleeing violence, poverty, and instability in their home countries, including Afghanistan, many undertake perilous sea journeys. While a significant number flee persecution under Taliban rule, the continued lack of effective international support and the neglect of their humanitarian situation contribute to the persistence of such tragedies.
