Record Surge in Americans Renouncing Citizenship Amid Trump’s Return and Tougher Tax Laws

Statistics reveal a significant rise in the number of Americans renouncing their citizenship or permanent residency in the United States this year — an unprecedented increase attributed to Donald Trump’s return to power and intensified tax regulations.
According to reports from media outlets and tax-related organizations, the number of such individuals has reached 4,574 since the beginning of 2024. Within this period, 1,331 Americans have renounced their citizenship in just the past three months, marking a substantial increase compared to previous decades.
The enactment of stringent tax laws by the U.S. Congress in 2010, which required foreign financial institutions to report the assets of American citizens, is considered a key factor behind this notable rise. Alexander Marino, head of a financial firm, reminded that Americans’ income is subject to U.S. taxation regardless of their residence anywhere in the world.
A similarly high rate of citizenship renunciations was last seen in 2016, coinciding with Trump’s initial election victory, and new records were set again in 2020. Early reports from this year indicate that this upward trend continues and may surpass previous records.
One former American citizen, now living in Europe, explicitly stated that their profound dissatisfaction with Trump’s policies was the main reason for giving up U.S. citizenship. This highlights the direct impact of the Trump administration’s approaches on the growing wave of renunciations and protests against tax laws and policies.
