Support for Germany’s CDU Drops to Historic Low in Hesse State Poll

According to the latest survey by the Infratest Dimap institute in Germany’s Hesse state, support for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Friedrich Merz, has fallen to 25 percent, marking the lowest level in the history of this poll. This figure represents a decline of about seven percentage points compared to the February survey of this year.

The CDU, which has governed the Hesse state for over two decades, remains in first place but its lead over the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has risen to 23 percent and is in second place, has narrowed to just two percentage points.

Meanwhile, the Green Party increased its support by two points to 16 percent, overtaking the Social Democrats (SPD), whose backing dropped by one point to 15 percent. Other parties include The Left with 7 percent and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) with 4 percent of the votes.

The survey results indicate that if state elections were held under current conditions, the existing coalition between the CDU and SPD would not be able to secure a majority in the Hesse parliament.

This survey was conducted between October 19 and 22, 2026, with the participation of 1,185 eligible voters through telephone and online methods.
