Foreign Affairs says Trump’s policies are weakening U.S. ties with its neighbours

Foreign Affairs has criticised the policies of current U.S. President Donald Trump, warning that his approach to neighbouring countries could weaken Washington’s relations with Canada and Mexico and make the country’s global standing more vulnerable.
According to Mehr News Agency, the magazine said Trump, through policies tinged with “domination,” is eroding one of the most important geopolitical features of the United States. Foreign Affairs added that Trump’s economic outlook is shaped by “profit and gain,” a stance that takes him outside the framework of strategic leaders.
The report stressed that, instead of pressure and tension, the United States should engage with its neighbours respectfully and rebuild bilateral partnerships.
Foreign Affairs said Trump’s coercive economic measures and threats of military intervention have revived long-standing historical concerns in Mexico about domination.
According to the report, Canada has also taken the position that Trump’s remarks describing the country as the “51st state of the United States” amount to an attack on Canada’s economy and independence. The magazine concluded that the Trump administration’s pressure on Canada and Mexico could weaken the foundations of U.S. global power because friendly relations with neighbours strengthen security, increase mutual economic interests and make it easier to manage cross-border challenges.
Canada and Mexico, as the United States’ two main neighbours and important trade and security partners for Washington, are among the key pillars of regional cooperation in North America, and any tension in these ties could have broader consequences for cross-border cooperation.
