Iran Offers to Help Rebuild Afghanistan’s Grain Silos
The Taliban administration says Iran has expressed readiness to cooperate in rebuilding Afghanistan’s grain silos and, if needed, to build new ones, in a move focused on grain storage in Afghanistan alongside other proposed areas of cooperation.
The Taliban-run companies department said in a statement on Sunday that its director general, Mawlawi Ahmad Jan Bilal, met with Iran’s Agriculture Minister, Gholamreza Nouri, during a visit to Iran. According to the department, the two sides discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in agriculture, exchanging experience and strengthening economic and trade relations.
According to the statement, Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture also expressed readiness to cooperate in the import of agricultural equipment and machinery, improved seeds, poultry feed and day-old chicks. The Taliban-run department did not release details on the timeline, implementation method or scope of this cooperation.
Bilal also stressed the need for joint coordination to implement the agreed cooperation and strengthen the agriculture sector and economic and trade ties between Afghanistan and Iran. He is also scheduled to meet with officials and representatives of a number of development and economic departments in Iran during the visit.
Silos are considered important facilities for storing grain and foodstuffs, and their role in storing agricultural products and managing food supply is regarded as significant. In recent years, Afghanistan has faced widespread shortages in agricultural infrastructure, including storage and processing facilities for crops.
