Iran says it is ready to supply up to 2,000 megawatts of electricity to Afghanistan

Iran has said it is ready to supply up to 2,000 megawatts of electricity to Afghanistan, as the country continues to depend on imported power. The issue was raised in a meeting between the two sides on cooperation in the electricity sector, drinking water and wastewater treatment.

The Taliban administration’s General Directorate of State-Owned Companies said in a statement that Mullah Ahmad Jan Bilal, head of the department, met with Iranian Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi during his visit to Iran. According to the statement, the ambassadors of the two countries were also present at the meeting.

The statement said the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation in the areas of energy, the supply of clean drinking water and the construction of wastewater treatment facilities. The Iranian official also said Tehran was ready to cooperate in training Afghanistan’s technical staff and strengthening their professional capacities.

Mullah Ahmad Jan Bilal stressed the expansion of cooperation in the energy sector, the strengthening of technical capacity and the implementation of joint projects. At the end of his visit, he also toured several major water and wastewater treatment facilities in Tehran.

In recent years, Afghanistan has imported a significant share of the electricity it needs from neighbouring countries, including Iran, a situation that has repeatedly highlighted the need for sustained investment in domestic energy infrastructure.
