Taliban say cold storage facility in Herat nearly complete

The Herat provincial governor’s press office says construction of a cold storage facility in the city of Herat is 97% complete and the facility is due to be commissioned within days.

According to the Taliban administration, the cold storage facility was built with an investment of $1.5 million and is located on a 4,000-square-metre plot of land. The statement says the facility has five storage rooms.

The Herat provincial governor’s press office said the cold storage facility has the capacity to store about 3,000 tonnes of fruit, vegetables, meat, pharmaceutical products and other food items. The administration said the necessary standards for preserving the quality of food products were also taken into account in its construction.

Local Herat officials, according to the statement, said the establishment of standard cold storage facilities could help reduce agricultural losses and preserve farmers’ produce throughout different seasons of the year.

Herat is one of Afghanistan’s important agricultural and commercial provinces in the west of the country, and the storage of agricultural products in the province has always been considered a basic need for farmers and food markets.
