Trump Lashes Out at Canada Over Weak Canadian Dollar

US President Donald Trump has continued his remarks on Canada, saying that the Canadian dollar’s weakness against the US dollar is not acceptable to Washington.

In a post on the Truth Social platform, he said the situation had persisted for years, but, in his view, would no longer be allowed to continue.

The comments came after Canada earlier announced tariffs on imports of about 700 US goods. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the duties would be imposed from Sept. 8 on goods worth 27.6 billion Canadian dollars.

Referring to Ottawa’s response to the new US tariffs, Carney said Canada’s reply would be “dollar for dollar” and that the country would not accept Washington’s proposal.

Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne had also previously said Ottawa would, in a reciprocal move, impose tariffs worth more than 27 billion dollars on US goods.

Canada is one of the United States’ major trading partners, and tariff tensions between the two countries have repeatedly overshadowed bilateral economic relations in recent years.
