Punjab Faces More Security Threats from Neighboring Provinces, Maryam Nawaz Says

Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province, has said that the province faces security threats from neighbouring provinces more than from neighbouring countries.

She said at a meeting in Lahore yesterday that she hoped the people of Punjab would spend the night in a fully secure environment. According to her, the security threats facing Punjab from neighbouring countries are fewer, but those from neighbouring provinces are greater.

The remarks come as Pakistani officials have long accused Afghanistan and India of involvement in insecurity and insurgent activity in Pakistan.

Punjab is Pakistan’s most populous province, and Lahore is its capital. It is considered one of Pakistan’s most important regions politically and economically.
