Taliban Official Says US and Pakistan Tensions Persist as He Cites Doha Agreement Breaches
Sheikh Shahabuddin Delawar, head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, told Tolo News that the United States had committed “3,000 violations” after the Doha Agreement. He also said Washington’s demands from the Taliban administration showed that the US had recognised the administration.
Delawar said in part of his remarks that the United States sitting down with the Taliban administration and raising commitments and demands meant, in his view, accepting this administration as a system. He did not provide further details on the alleged US violations after the Doha Agreement.
The head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society also linked the failure of intra-Afghan talks to what he called the “lack of seriousness” of members of the former government in the process. He also said the departure of foreign forces was a sign that Afghans do not surrender to any country and, according to him, no country can succeed in Afghanistan by force.
He added that with the end of the “occupation,” the need for negotiations had ended, he said, but Afghanistan still needed diplomatic, trade and humanitarian talks with the world. Delawar also claimed that some parties did not want prosperity and a single authority in Afghanistan and therefore had not recognised the Taliban administration.
Delawar went on to say, regarding recent clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, that Islamabad had made a mistake in this regard. He also claimed that some countries want Afghanistan to remain under their influence politically, militarily and economically.
In another part of his remarks, the head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society claimed that the Taliban administration is committed to upholding women’s rights and, according to him, women’s and girls’ rights have been granted in various sectors. The claim comes as the Taliban administration’s restrictions on women’s and girls’ education, work and public presence have faced widespread domestic and international criticism in recent years.
The Doha Agreement was signed in 2020 between the United States and the Taliban and is considered one of the key documents in the process of the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan. Sheikh Shahabuddin Delawar is one of the well-known figures of the Taliban administration and had previously been present in the Taliban political office in Doha.
