Nepal flood death toll rises to 734, with 2,498 still missing
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has said the death toll from the country’s devastating floods has risen to 734, with another 2,498 people still missing.
According to the latest figures from the agency, search teams have recovered bodies in several areas. Among the affected districts, Chitwan recorded the highest number of deaths at 259, followed by eastern Nawalparasi with 184.
Nepali officials said Rasuwa has the highest number of missing people, with 562 unaccounted for. At the same time, rescue and relief operations continue in the affected areas.
On Sunday, following a rise in water levels in the Bhotekoshi River, the Nepalese government warned of the possibility of fresh flooding and urged residents in flood-hit areas to remain on full alert.
According to reports, flood warnings were sent to people’s mobile phones on Sunday morning. Meanwhile, rescue teams were working to reopen the main highway between Kathmandu and one of the areas severely affected by Wednesday’s deadly floods.
Dharam Raj Aperty, executive director of Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, said the warnings were issued after Chinese authorities alerted their Nepali counterparts to increased water flow in upstream areas. Nepal is a mountainous country in South Asia, and during the rainy season, floods and landslides are among the recurrent events in parts of the country.
