Afghanistan-Iran Rail Cargo Traffic Rises Sharply, Says Iranian Embassy

The volume of goods transported by rail between Afghanistan and Iran has increased from 15,000 tonnes a year to about 130,000 tonnes a month, the Iranian embassy in Kabul said.

In a post on X on Tuesday, the embassy said rail transfers between the two countries had risen significantly compared with the past. According to the statement, the level of cargo movement is now far higher than the amount recorded in previous years.

At the same time, Iran’s railway company estimated that total cargo transported along this route could reach about 1.5 million tonnes in a year. If realised, the figure would indicate a further expansion in the use of the rail route for trade between the two countries.

The railway is considered one of the important routes for trade transit between Afghanistan and neighbouring countries, and in recent years attention to rail transport has increased because of its lower cost and higher capacity.
