Inactive traffic lights worsen congestion in Jalalabad

Residents of Jalalabad city are complaining of increased congestion on the city’s roads because the traffic lights are out of service, saying the situation has disrupted their daily commute. According to them, the continued problem has caused people to arrive late for official work, and transporting patients to hospital has also become difficult.
A number of residents of Jalalabad say that when the traffic lights were operational, congestion in parts of the city was lower, but their current inactivity has created problems for citizens. They have urged the Taliban administration to take steps as soon as possible to activate the lights.
Residents of the city also stress that drivers who do not follow traffic rules and regulations should face firm legal action. In their view, the lack of effective traffic management has made movement in Jalalabad more difficult.
These complaints come as in a number of Afghan cities, including Kabul, traffic lights are either inactive or have not been installed at all. Jalalabad is the capital of Nangarhar province and, because of the large presence of rickshaws, is also known among people as the city of the “yellow rickshaws.”
