Karzai Marks Independence Day by Calling for Education for Afghan Girls and Boys

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai has, on the 107th anniversary of the country’s independence, stressed the need to provide education for all Afghan children, both girls and boys, a matter highlighted by the Taliban administration’s continued restrictions on girls’ education.

In a message posted on his X page on Wednesday, Aug. 28, Karzai said Afghanistan could move forward with “national cohesion and strength” and secure its rightful place in the international community.

He also said safeguarding independence and making use of its achievements would only be possible when Afghanistan becomes a “strong and self-reliant” country. According to him, ensuring lasting peace and stability, preserving national unity, and giving young people access to science and knowledge are among the essential factors for the country’s strength and progress.

The remarks come as the Taliban administration has, since returning to power, suspended education for girls above sixth grade and also banned women and girls from continuing their studies at universities.

Afghanistan’s restoration of independence dates back to Aug. 28, 1919, when the country gained independence in its foreign policy after the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The occasion is marked every year in the country.
