Taliban Questions Effectiveness of UN Mission in Afghanistan

The Taliban administration has questioned the effectiveness of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), describing it as largely ineffective.

In an interview with Tolo News, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid claimed that UNAMA has failed to play a significant political role in Afghanistan’s international engagements. He said the mission’s activities have not yielded any tangible results in bringing Afghanistan closer to the global community.

However, Mujahid expressed hope that the newly appointed UN representative could take steps toward constructive engagement and create opportunities for closer interaction between the Taliban administration and the international community.

UNAMA, the UN’s political mission in Afghanistan, has continued its operations following the collapse of the former republic in August 2021. Its stated objectives include promoting human rights, delivering humanitarian aid, and facilitating dialogue among all political stakeholders. Nevertheless, Taliban officials have repeatedly accused the mission of partiality and failing to fulfill its mandate.
