Afghanistan’s UN Envoy Criticizes Taliban for Unjust Detention of Women
Nasir Ahmad Faiq, the head of Afghanistan’s mission to the United Nations, has condemned the detention of women and girls on charges of “improper hijab,” stating that the Taliban administration’s actions starkly violate the principles of justice and the rule of law. He stressed that existing reports indicate that some detainees have faced physical and sexual violence in detention centers.
On Sunday, July 19, Faiq wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) page that, in addition to arbitrary detentions, there are also reports of pressure on women and their families to accept forced marriages. According to him, these actions not only violate the human dignity of women but also undermine the Taliban administration’s claims of providing security and justice.
The head of Afghanistan’s UN delegation raised the question of whether Taliban leadership is aware of their forces’ behavior or if such actions are carried out under their direction, calling for transparent accountability on this matter. He emphasized that the continuation of such a situation severely damages public trust.
Faiq also noted that the exemption of Taliban affiliates from legal prosecution and the selective enforcement of laws against ordinary citizens are clear signs of the absence of structural justice in the country. He believes that the continuation of this approach deepens the divide between the people and the Taliban administration and further intensifies the crisis of distrust.
