Afghan Women’s Movement Warns Educational Ban Threatens Country’s Future

The Afghan Women’s Voice Movement has declared that depriving women and girls of education is a blatant violation of human rights and poses a serious threat to the country’s future. Emphasizing the fundamental right to education, the movement has called for practical measures to reopen schools and universities to girls.

On Sunday, July 5, the movement announced the launch of a series of “visual designs” purportedly created in solidarity with millions of Afghan women and girls who have been prevented from continuing their education due to the Taliban administration’s educational restrictions.

The statement highlighted that education is the foundation of development, social justice, and lasting peace, warning that any targeted deprivation of girls’ education will have wide-ranging and long-term consequences on the country’s social and economic structure. According to the movement, a society in which half of its population is deprived of education cannot achieve true stability and progress.

The Afghan Women’s Voice Movement also urged national and international organizations, as well as human rights activists, to take practical and effective actions to end educational restrictions and reopen educational institutions for girls. The movement stressed that education, work, and freedom are fundamental women’s rights and pledged to continue their advocacy efforts until these rights are realized.

Since the Taliban’s return to power, education for girls above the sixth grade and university-level education for women have been suspended. This move has prompted widespread domestic and international reactions and remains a major concern for human rights organizations.
