Afghan Consulate in Bonn Resumes Services Under Taliban Control

The Afghan consulate in Bonn, Germany, which is now operating under Taliban control, has announced the resumption of its consular services. The office stated that, starting Monday, November 9, Afghan citizens residing in Germany can now schedule appointments through the consulate’s official website and visit the office to access services.

The reopening follows a period of closure that occurred after several former staff members resigned due to internal disputes and their refusal to cooperate with Taliban-appointed representatives. These conflicts and mass resignations had brought regular consular operations in the city to a halt.

While the Taliban are working to take control of diplomatic missions abroad, their lack of international recognition and extra-legal governance in Afghanistan have raised serious questions among Afghan diaspora communities in Europe regarding the legitimacy of consulates operating under Taliban authority.

The Bonn consulate, now under Taliban control, has also pledged to begin printing and distributing passports in the near future—a move that has sparked further concerns about the international validity of such documents and how other countries will engage with them.
