Taliban’s Defense Minister Mullah Yaqoob Calls for Professional Afghan Defense Structure at Moscow Security Meeting

Mullah Yaqoob Mujahid, the Taliban-appointed defense minister, called for the establishment of a professional and organized defense structure in Afghanistan during the International Security Meeting in Moscow. He claimed that the purpose of this initiative is to ensure the country’s security and strengthen regional stability.
According to a report by Bakhtar News Agency, which operates under Taliban administration, he stated on Friday, May 29, at the meeting that the Taliban administration will not allow Afghan territory to be used against other countries. This comes amid past concerns regarding the activity of armed groups in parts of Afghanistan.
The Taliban defense minister also asserted that the group has achieved ‘comprehensive security’ across Afghanistan and claimed that since the Taliban regained power in 2021, ISIS has been completely destroyed. However, in the over four years since, reports of security incidents and sporadic attacks in several provinces have painted a different picture of the security situation.
Mullah Yaqoob Mujahid further said that certain parties are trying to destabilize Afghanistan but did not specify any country or group. These remarks come as the Taliban administration has yet to present clear details about the envisaged defense structure or how it plans to address domestic and regional security concerns.
