Kyrgyzstan Pledges Focus on Afghanistan Stability if Elected to UN Security Council

The President of Kyrgyzstan has stated that if his country is elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, special attention will be given to the situation in Afghanistan. Sadyr Japarov emphasized that the security of Central Asian countries is directly linked to stability in Afghanistan, and the two cannot be considered separately.

In a message released on Sunday, May 17, by the press office of the Kyrgyz presidential administration, addressed to UN member state leaders, Japarov said that Bishkek, based on this perspective, would provide ongoing humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan, especially women and children. He also reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups in Afghanistan.

The Kyrgyz president further backed the gradual economic and political integration of Afghanistan into the international community. This stance comes amid complex political challenges and extensive restrictions, particularly on women, following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, which has complicated many countries’ official engagement with Kabul.

These remarks are part of Kyrgyzstan’s diplomatic campaign to secure a non-permanent seat on the Security Council. The election for the five non-permanent members for the 2027–2028 term is scheduled for June 3, 2026, at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Japarov has called on fellow UN member leaders to support Kyrgyzstan’s candidacy. He has repeatedly emphasized that instability in Afghanistan could have direct security repercussions for Central Asia.

Meanwhile, Russia, a strategic ally and partner of Kyrgyzstan, previously reported the presence of between 18,000 and 23,000 militants operating in Afghanistan. Sergey Shoigu, Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, also stated that the situation in Afghanistan holds “special significance” for the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
