Landslide in Badakhshan Kills Five Miners

A landslide of a soil hill in the Shahr-e Bozorg district of Badakhshan province claimed the lives of five miners this morning. The incident occurred in the “Pastaw” area of Aweiz village.

Local sources report that the victims were residents of the Yawan district and were engaged in preliminary gold extraction work inside tunnels at the time of the accident. According to Mir Ahmad, commander of the 4th Border Company in Shahr-e Bozorg district, these individuals were inside the mine when the landslide happened.

Based on the information provided, soil instability and a lack of safety equipment and measures are cited as the main factors behind the incident. In recent years, mining activities in some parts of Badakhshan have continued without effective supervision and adherence to necessary technical standards, raising concerns about worker safety.

Despite the recurrence of such events, no detailed information has yet been released regarding any specific measures taken by the Taliban administration to oversee safety in small mines and prevent similar accidents. This issue has consistently been a point of criticism from the victims’ families and local residents.
