Eight-Year-Old Child Drowns in Nangarhar Canal

Taliban officials in Nangarhar province have confirmed that an eight-year-old child drowned in the Batikot district of the province. According to the officials, the incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, in the village of Hejratabad.

Homayoun Gharibmal, spokesperson for Nangarhar’s canal administration, stated that the canal’s water was temporarily drained to locate and retrieve the child’s body. He added that efforts to find the body and return it to the family are ongoing.

Officials have urged residents to exercise caution when going near canals and rivers, especially during recreational activities and swimming, and to supervise children and adolescents closely.

Several drowning cases have been reported across various provinces in the country this year. Despite recurring incidents, citizens have repeatedly complained about the lack of basic rescue equipment and facilities in water areas—a situation that highlights the absence of preventive measures and effective management by the Taliban administration.
