Swiss Representative Calls for Accountability Over Human Rights Violations in Afghanistan

The Swiss representative at the Third Committee meeting of the United Nations General Assembly emphasized the necessity of establishing accountability mechanisms to address human rights violations in Afghanistan. Referring to arrest warrants issued against Taliban leaders by the International Criminal Court, she stated that preventing impunity in the country is of utmost importance.

The representative expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, noting that over 3.7 million children under five are suffering from acute malnutrition. She added that poverty and food insecurity have made conditions especially difficult for these children.

According to the representative’s report, boys are forced into hard labor, while girls face pressures of forced marriages aimed at resolving family disputes, exacerbating widespread violations of children’s rights. The deprivation of girls from secondary education and ideological restrictions on boys’ education put the future of Afghanistan’s younger generation at risk.

The Swiss representative stressed that Afghan children must grow up in an environment where their rights are respected and opportunities for development and growth are provided.

She also referenced the warrants issued by the International Criminal Court against senior Taliban officials on charges of crimes against humanity, including sexual and political abuse, underscoring her country’s insistence on the need for independent investigative mechanisms to combat impunity in Afghanistan.
