At Least 24 Killed in Bus Crash on Kenya’s Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

Kenyan police said a deadly crash occurred on Sunday, October 25, at about 7:45 a.m. in the Kanga area near the town of Mtito Andei on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, killing at least 24 people and injuring 24 others.

The bus, which belonged to the “Power of the Word International” church in Mombasa, was carrying passengers returning home from western Kenya after attending the funeral of their pastor.

Local officials, including Abdullah Khalif, the Makueni county commissioner, said the bus driver was attempting to overtake several other vehicles when it collided with a cargo truck carrying cement. Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority also said dangerous overtaking was the main cause of the crash.

The tragedy comes just three weeks after another road accident on the same highway killed 17 people, underscoring the need to improve road safety.
