North Korea says it has successfully tested advanced underwater weapons

North Korea conducted an underwater test of a new weapons system featuring very fast, guided torpedoes, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said on Saturday.

The agency said the test was an important step in developing the North Korean navy’s capabilities, and confirmed the positive performance of the propulsion technology, which has been developed over the past five years through more than 180 tests.

Reports also said artificial intelligence technology was used to monitor targets and guide the weapons.

Earlier, on Thursday, North Korea’s official media said two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles had been tested off the east coast. The move was aimed at assessing the reliability of deterrent equipment and improving the navy’s ability to carry out strategic missions.

The weapons developments come as regional tensions and efforts to expand military capabilities in the coastal waters of northeast Asia continue. The development of advanced underwater weapons could deepen concerns over an arms race and maritime security stability in the region.
