Green Hope Township Residents Call for Halt to Forced Evictions

Residents of Green Hope Township in western Kabul say carrying out an eviction order on their homes without an impartial and transparent review of ownership documents would put thousands of families at risk of homelessness and financial hardship. In an open letter to Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, they have called for the process to be stopped immediately.

The township’s residents said many families, after years of work and enduring economic hardship, spent all their savings to buy or build homes, and now their only shelter is under threat. The letter says: “With thousands of hopes, years of toil and hardship, we saved little by little to build a shelter for ourselves and our children.”

The residents of Green Hope emphasized that their homes are not only places to live, but also a source of security and a future for their children. They have asked the Taliban administration to prevent any action that could lead to eviction or the loss of their homes until the legal status of the land is clarified.

According to Eraf, the acting justice minister of the Taliban administration said the township had been built on state land of about 1,507 jeribs and ordered its eviction. The ministry has set monthly rent at 4,000 Afghanis for each room in Green Hope Township and has also asked owners to pay six months of back rent.

Residents have described the decision as a clear injustice and a disregard for their ownership. The township’s owner and several residents, presenting deeds and ownership documents, have also called for the case to be reviewed again and for a fair hearing.

They have warned that ignoring the objections and existing documents could have serious social and economic consequences and further damage public trust in legal and judicial processes. The dispute over the township’s land is part of broader land and housing ownership conflicts in Afghanistan.
