Navi Pillay Calls for Recognition of ‘Gender Apartheid’ in Afghanistan

Navi Pillay, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a prominent human rights figure, has called for the recognition of “gender apartheid,” criticising the Taliban administration’s restrictions on women and girls.

In her writings and public statements, she has said that protecting the fundamental rights of Afghan women and ensuring their genuine and effective participation are key issues in discussions about the country’s future.

According to the report, Ms. Pillay remains a board member of one of the organisations supporting Afghan women and continues to advocate for women in the country through legal and civil avenues.

Navi Pillay, an 85-year-old South African lawyer and judge, has devoted much of her professional life to defending human rights, women’s rights and the fight against discrimination. She previously served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

During her tenure as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, she spoke repeatedly about the human rights situation in Afghanistan and stressed the need to protect the rights of Afghan women.

According to sources, Ms. Pillay also warned during a visit to Afghanistan in September 2013 about threats that could endanger the gains made by Afghan women. She has continued to advocate for women in the country after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan as well.
