UN launches repair of 800 shelters in Kunduz and Baghlan

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) says it has started work to repair 800 shelters for vulnerable families in Kunduz and Baghlan provinces, with support from the UN Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (UN STFA).

The agency wrote on X on Thursday, 16 Mizan, that thousands of returning families in Afghanistan are facing a shortage of adequate shelter, and many of them need assistance to make their homes usable.

According to UN-Habitat, despite the launch of this programme, shelter needs remain widespread, and many returning families still require further support to repair or rebuild their homes.

The move comes as the return of Afghans from neighbouring countries has increased in recent years, putting greater pressure on facilities and services in the areas where they return.

According to figures from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), about 5.4 million Afghans returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan between October 2023 and the end of 2025, a figure that has highlighted the need for shelter and basic services in many areas.
