UN says housing needs for returnees in Afghanistan have risen

The United Nations says the return of large numbers of migrants to Afghanistan has increased the need for adequate housing and shelter, and that current support is not sufficient to meet those needs.
The agency said on Monday, Oct. 13, to mark World Habitat Day, that more than six million Afghans have returned to the country since late 2023. The UN expects the number of returnees to rise further in 2026.
The UN has announced this year’s World Habitat Day theme as “Adequate housing for all.” It stressed that returnees need proper housing.
World Habitat Day is observed every year on Oct. 5 and aims to draw attention to housing conditions, urban development and people’s living conditions around the world. The UN General Assembly created the observance in 1985, and it was first held in 1986.
