India Urges Continued Global Focus on Afghanistan’s Humanitarian Needs

India has stressed the need for the international community to maintain its focus on Afghanistan’s humanitarian needs.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Vikram Misri, the ministry’s deputy chief, made the remarks during a meeting with Roza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA, in which he underlined the need for continued global attention to the humanitarian needs of the Afghan people.
According to the statement, Misri also voiced support for UNAMA’s role, saying the body could be effective in coordinating multilateral efforts to address the situation in Afghanistan.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, an annual gathering regarded as one of the most important forums for diplomatic consultations on international crises and issues.
India’s Foreign Ministry said Roza Otunbayeva also expressed appreciation during the meeting for India’s support for the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States.
