Unexploded Ordnance in Eastern Afghanistan Kills or Injures 64 Civilians, UN Says

Unexploded ordnance and other remnants of war in eastern Afghanistan have killed or injured 64 civilians in 64 incidents, according to Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The incidents have been recorded since the start of this year.

Speaking at a news briefing, Dujarric said Afghanistan remains one of the countries with the highest number of casualties from unexploded ordnance. He added that these materials pose a serious threat, especially to children.

According to the UN secretary-general’s spokesman, the organisation and its partners are working to raise awareness of the dangers of explosive materials, clear contaminated areas and assist affected communities; however, a severe shortage of funding has affected these efforts.
