Taliban-run Kabul municipality continues preliminary review of metro plan

The Taliban-run Kabul municipality says technical studies for establishing a metro system in Kabul are continuing, but the project is still at the discussion and preliminary preparation stage, and the routes, construction costs, number of stations and funding sources have not been announced.

According to officials from the municipality, the aim of the metro plan is to reduce traffic congestion and create a public transport network in the capital. Kabul is facing a growing population, heavy traffic and a lack of public transport networks; however, it is still unclear what budget the project will be financed with and when it will be implemented.

The Taliban-run municipality had previously also announced preliminary studies for the creation of “metrobus” lines along a number of major routes in Kabul. No details have been provided on how these studies are linked to the new metro plan.

The municipality has also said that the plan to clean up the Kabul River has been finalized and survey teams will begin examining and assessing the riverbed from tomorrow. The municipality said the purpose of the work is to improve the urban environment, manage surface water and prevent flooding during the rainy season.

The Taliban-run municipality said it has recently cleared sections of the Kabul River route and is also carrying out projects to manage surface water along various parts of the city. According to the municipality, these projects are designed to prevent roads from flooding and to regulate water flow.
