Brishna signs deal with Tajik firm to supply electricity to border areas of Badakhshan

Brishna, the company under Taliban control, said it has signed an agreement with the Tajik company Pamir Energy to supply electricity to the border areas of Badakhshan province. Afghanistan imports about 75% of the electricity it needs from neighbouring countries, especially Central Asian states.

The agreement was signed on Saturday, 11 Mizan, in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, by Abdulhaq Hamkar, head of Brishna, and Amir Khan Rahim, head of Pamir Energy. Brishna also said it is holding talks with Tajikistan on extending the 110-kilovolt electricity transmission contract to central Badakhshan.

According to Brishna, Pamir Energy is also reviewing the company’s other proposals on electricity supply and contract extensions. The Taliban administration described the agreement as a step toward expanding bilateral cooperation and ensuring electricity supply.

Brishna also asked Tajikistan on 8 Mizan to increase the amount of electricity it exports to Afghanistan. The request was made during a meeting between Abdulhaq Hamkar and Muhammad Umar Assozoda, head of Tajikistan’s electricity company.

According to published information, Tajikistan exported about 702 million kilowatt-hours of electricity to Afghanistan in the first six months of 2026, and Afghanistan was the largest buyer of Tajik electricity during that period. Afghanistan spends millions of dollars annually to buy electricity from Tajikistan.
