Khalilzad Questions Shehbaz Sharif’s Commitment to Afghan Women’s Rights

Zalmay Khalilzad, the former US special envoy for Afghanistan peace, has said Pakistan’s policies toward Afghanistan over the past three decades call into question Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s commitment to the demands and rights of Afghan women and girls.
Khalilzad wrote on X yesterday that this record includes support for armed groups against US forces, as well as mistreatment of Afghan refugees.
He made the remarks in response to Shehbaz Sharif’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly, where the Pakistani prime minister had stressed the need to respect the fundamental rights of Afghan women and girls.
The UN General Assembly is one of the body’s main annual meetings, where leaders present their views on major global and regional issues. In recent years, Pakistan has repeatedly drawn attention and criticism over developments in Afghanistan because of its role and policies.
