Qatari Diplomat Meets UNAMA Chief in New York on Afghanistan

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al-Misnad, the country’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, met with Roza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

According to the Foreign Ministry, the meeting took place on the sidelines of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The ministry did not release further details about the substance of the talks or the outcome of the meeting.

Roza Otunbayeva heads UNAMA, an agency mandated to monitor the situation in Afghanistan and coordinate part of the UN’s efforts in the country. In recent years, Qatar has also played a mediating and facilitating role in a number of Afghanistan-related files.
