Taliban says power projects advancing in Ghazni and Kabul
The Taliban administration has announced progress on electricity generation projects in Ghazni province and the Nangerhar area of Kabul, saying work is under way by Azizi Energy on schemes that it says will help reduce part of the country’s power needs.
Abdulhaq Hamkar, chief executive officer of Breshna Company, raised the issue at the inauguration of four major electricity projects in Kabul and Parwan. He said Azizi Energy has also begun preliminary work on other power generation projects in several separate locations.
According to Hamkar, these projects will be implemented on the basis of the commitments made. He also claimed that once the projects currently under construction by investors are completed, important steps will be taken to meet Afghanistan’s electricity demand.
The Breshna chief executive added that the completion of these projects will bring Afghanistan closer to self-sufficiency in the power sector. However, he gave no further details on the exact timeline for completion or the amount of electricity that these projects will generate.
Breshna is the body responsible for regulating and distributing electricity in Afghanistan, and a large share of the country’s power consumption is still imported from abroad, a situation that has for years affected the stable supply of electricity in a number of provinces.
